Active Agenda, Inc. utilizes a dual licensing strategy. The product and source code are distributed under the Reciprocal Public License (RPL) and a Non-Reciprocal Private License Addendum (NRPL).

The NRPL was created to satisfy a growing number of requests from the community. The NRPL allows business users to extend Active Agenda's functionality without releasing business process trade secrets or unique intellectual property. The NRPL also increases the appeal of the project to persons more interested in using Active Agenda's development platform, spec2app, to address niche industry opportunities.

A NRPL license holder may develop custom modules without the obligation to distribute these customizations publicly, or notify the world community of their creation. In other words, the NRPL allows the license holder to keep their custom extensions private. The NRPL allows the project to enhance the core technology platform (spec2app) and operational risk domain elements with the proceeds (cash or contributions) from this license.

The NRPL addendum is available for purchase and grants perpetual rights to withold custom enhancements.
